Asthma Monitoring and Management App (AMMA)

A prevention app for asthma sufferers to track and monitor their symptoms and be more in control of their health.

'AMMA' wearable devices, by Google, are a health activity monitor designed to track and manage the conditions for asthma patients. Their products will pair to a companion mobile app that helps with prevention leading to sudden asthma attacks.

Google has asked for Designlab to create design concepts for a friendly, reliable 'AMMA' companion app experience that records and tracks asthma conditions to manage the health for every user.

Approach

The initial phase started with research to identify the links between asthma sufferers, their symptoms and how they monitor asthmatic conditions. I conducted research to expand my current knowledge about those suffering with this choric asthma conditions. This lead to generating a few questions to further enhance the primary user research:

  • What symptoms and triggers would be useful to track by asthma sufferers?

  • How will users feel more in control of their asthma and benefit from using this product?

  • How will users be motivated to monitor and manage their conditions?Once a solution was clearly defined, I designed the user flow,  lo-fi wireframes, branding and final prototypes to deliver a delightful app experience for helping those to prevent asthma.

A question considered to define problem:  "What would allow a user to have a normal, worry-free life that is non-intrusive to their daily living?"

Experience Design

Through research validation, the medications, triggers, and emergency contacts were determined as a few solutions 'AMMA' could focus on prevention. I expanded on a ‘new user’ user flow that led to constructing lo-fi wireframes for this product. For the design solution, I approached a design that would benefit user's goals through user onboarding process and chatbot functionality.

The app's interface design began with defining the brand identity for this mobile application. 'AMMA' brand is known as:  ACTIVE, FRIENDLY, FREE, HEALTHY, ASSURANCE, RELIABLE. The dashboard was designed to be a clean, simple interface that would address the user's needs for weather and health information available from the device.

For the future

During the initial ideation phase, I focused on an ‘active’ approach to solve problem, but soon realized through feedback and testing that a ‘non-intrusive’ approach was most impactful. This became clear when I integrated designs for a chatbot and the benefits for enhancing the user's experience and final product.

For further follow-ups, I would conduct more user testing on product to ensure the customer value in these initial designs. Also, I’d include user feedback to enhance future features for “feeling in control of their health” and “being less impacted with exercise induced asthma”.
